Mortuaries in Uganda are full of Covid-19 bodies, here is who to blame and how we should have avoided it

This means those going to hospital are dying at a faster rate than our health system can handle.

Yesterday, a video of air ambulances loading critically ill patients on oxygen support on planes circulated on social media. The Monitor and other media houses tweeted that planes had made several trips to Nairobi taking Covid-19 patient.

Currently, all hospitals are full to capacity but that is not the alarming situation, the worst part is, mortuaries are equally full to capacity. This means those going to hospital are dying at a faster rate than our health system can handle. That’s why, the other day, a family dumped a covid-19 dead body on the streets and ran away. Also, Hospital no longer want to take in critically ill people; with no oxygen, they don't want the burden of a dead body with no mortuary space.

HOW DID WE GET HERE?

Let me take you a big back, in the early 2020, there was a debate to postpone the presidential elections as it was feared that they could lead to wider spread of the virus. In fact, some medical pundits fronted an idea of a six-month total lockdown.

All these ideas were presented to Museveni but to the surprise of many, he disqualified the experts' opinion.

Postponing elections would imply that he gets out of the office and the speaker take over. Under such circumstances, the speaker would have created a situation barring Museveni from ever standing for presidency again. Museveni knew that going against the idea would come with paying a heavy price of risking at least three quarters of Ugandans infected and a quarter dead. He opted to take the risk.

The option of a long lockdown was also disqualified by Museveni on grounds that the population is politically fragile and anything could spark an uprising. He disqualified that too... If you recall during the November 2020 protests, the military deployment signaled a state of fear in Museveni's camp.

To date, we all have to die or lose our loved ones because Museveni made a trade with the devil. Our lives in exchange for power.

It's not too late, we still can turn the clock and push him out if we want to stay alive.
